7-keto-DHEA is a steroid-related compound and metabolite of DHEA that is sold mainly as a dietary supplement for weight management and fat burning. Its full chemical names include 7-oxo-DHEA and 3-acetyl-7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone. It is not the same as DHEA and has no connection to the ketogenic diet.

A 2023 systematic review found only four eligible studies. In one trial, 7-keto-DHEA increased resting metabolic rate by about 21 calories per day compared with placebo. These findings do not establish that it produces substantial weight loss or that it is safe for long-term use.

How Is 7-Keto-DHEA Different From DHEA?

DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The body can convert DHEA into other steroid hormones, including testosterone, androstenedione and estradiol.

7-keto-DHEA is a related metabolite. It is marketed differently from DHEA because it is not intended to act as a direct replacement for that hormone. Ordinary DHEA is sold separately, and DHEA supplement options online are plain DHEA rather than 7-keto, so the ingredient name on the label is the thing to check.

A small human safety study examined 3-acetyl-7-oxo-DHEA and measured testosterone, estradiol, cortisol, thyroid hormones and insulin, among other markers. The study was small and short, so it does not establish the long-term hormonal effects of 7-keto-DHEA.

Why Do People Take 7-Keto-DHEA?

7-keto-DHEA is mainly marketed for:

  • Weight loss
  • Fat reduction
  • Increasing resting metabolic rate
  • Supporting calorie-restricted diets
  • Increasing energy expenditure

The proposed mechanism involves enzymes linked to thyroid hormone metabolism and thermogenesis. Those effects have led to claims that 7-keto-DHEA can help the body burn more calories. A proposed mechanism, however, does not prove that a supplement causes weight loss.

Does 7-Keto-DHEA Help With Weight Loss?

Current evidence does not show that 7-keto-DHEA reliably produces meaningful weight loss.

A 2023 systematic review found only four eligible studies. Two reported a significant reduction in body weight. Individual studies also reported changes in body fat, body mass index or resting metabolic rate. The review concluded that the evidence was insufficient to determine whether 7-keto-DHEA is effective or safe enough to recommend for weight-loss treatment.

One randomized crossover trial involving overweight adults found that 7-keto-DHEA increased resting metabolic rate by about 21 calories per day compared with placebo during a seven-day treatment period. That result does not show that the supplement causes substantial or sustained fat loss.

Evidence Summary

Question Evidence-based answer
Can it increase resting metabolic rate? It may cause a small short-term increase in some studies.
Does it cause substantial fat loss? This has not been established.
Is it a proven obesity treatment? No.
Can it replace diet, exercise or approved treatments? No.

Is 7-Keto-DHEA Safe?

Short-term clinical studies have generally reported no serious adverse events. The research is limited, though, and does not tell us enough about the effects of regular long-term use.

Potential concerns include:

  • Unknown effects on steroid and thyroid pathways
  • Unclear interactions with prescription medicines
  • Differences in product quality between supplement brands
  • Possible problems for people with hormone-sensitive conditions
  • Confusion between 7-keto-DHEA and ordinary DHEA, which can affect androgen and estrogen levels

Speak with a healthcare professional before using 7-keto-DHEA if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a hormone-sensitive condition, have liver or endocrine problems, or take prescription medication. Do not use it to self-treat low hormone levels, thyroid disease or obesity.

Is 7-Keto-DHEA Banned in Sport?

Yes. The 2026 World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List includes 7-keto-DHEA as a prohibited anabolic agent at all times, both in and out of competition. Competitive athletes should avoid it unless they have checked its status with their governing body and a qualified anti-doping adviser.

Supplement labels may use alternative names such as 7-oxo-DHEA. Athletes should check the full ingredient list rather than relying only on the product name.

Is 7-Keto-DHEA Worth Taking?

For general weight loss, 7-keto-DHEA is not a well-supported choice. Human evidence is limited, the benefit shown in trials is small, and long-term safety remains uncertain. The compound is also prohibited in sport.

For weight management, established options include a calorie-appropriate eating plan, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and, when appropriate, treatment prescribed and monitored by a qualified healthcare professional.
